AIMP1 (aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase-interacting multifunctional protein 1)/endothelial monocyte activating polypeptide-II (EMAP-II) is also termed as p43. It is present in the nucleus of normal and healthy chondrocytes. EMAP-II is a multifunctional cytokine. It is located on human chromosome 4q24.

AIMP1 actively participates in inflammation, angiogenesis, wound healing and glucose homeostasis. It blocks SMAD2 (SMAD family member 2) and SMAD3 (SMAD family member 3) phosphorylation and downregulates TGF-β (transforming growth factor beta 1) signaling. Endothelial monocyte activating polypeptide-II (EMAP-II) possesses proinflammatory and anti angiogenic activity, that plays a vital role in the progression of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis.
