The dorsal ectoderm of the limb bud is known to regulate anterior-posterior patterning as well as dorsal-ventral patterning during vertebrate limb morphogenesis. Wnt-7a, expressed in the dorsal ectoderm, encodes a key molecule implicated in these events. In addition, Wnt-7a guides the development of the anterior-posterior axis in the female reproductive tract, and plays a critical role in uterine smooth muscle pattering and maintenance of adult uterine function. Wnt-7a is required for the sexually dimorphic development of the mammalian reproductive tract.
