It plays an essential role in the maximal colony formation, proliferation, migration, and invasion during stress with Hypoxia Inducible Factor 2 (HIF-2). It stimulates the activation reaction of acetate for lipid synthesis and energy generation. Acetate plays a major role in almost all the metabolic pathways. Monomeric form of the ACSS2 generates acetate in an ATP dependent reaction. The activity is controlled by sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs). It is clinically associated with the cancer cell growth under low-oxygen and lipid-depleted conditions.
