Ytterbium(III) fluoride is used in making laser crystal. It is used in ceramics, glass, phosphors. It is also used in used in the preparation and study of fluorinated glasses. It is used as catalysts in alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization.

Store in cool, dry place in tightly closed container. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, strong reducing agent.
