It is used in water purification, in vegetable glues, in porcelain cements, in deodorant, in tanning and in fireproofing textiles. It serves as an ingredient in animal repellant sprays. Further, it is used in the preparation of Alum (Al(OH)₃) gel. In addition, it is used in cosmetic formulation, fertilizers, food preservation and in the heating system.

Becomes anhydrous at about 250°, decomposes above 280°Incompatible with strong bases, aluminum, steel, zinc and copper.
