SMC1B (structural maintenance of chromosomes 1B) encodes a protein belonging to the ‘Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes′ family of proteins that are involved in chromosome folding and dynamics. The SMC proteins contain two extended coiled-coil domains, an NTP binding motif (Walker A box) at the N-terminus and DNA-binding DA box at the C-terminus.

SMC1B (structural maintenance of chromosomes 1B) encodes a meiosis-specific component of cohesin complex. It is essential for the maintenance of meiotic cohesion, synapsis, recombination and chromosome movements. The cohesion complex is involved in the cohesion of sister chromatids after DNA replication.
