Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is also called plasma lipid transfer protein. It is encoded by CETP gene. It is a plasma protein that helps in the transport of cholesteryl esters and triglycerides between the lipoproteins. CETP is an important regulator of plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). It plays an important role in reverse cholesterol and is involved in metabolism of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Its deficiency is a unique plasma lipoprotein profile without any symptoms and is common in East Asia. It may act as a candidate gene for human longevity.
