Potassium hexachloroiridate(III) hydrate is used to prepare other iridium compounds. It is used as a redox mediator to visualize human finger prints on a poly(vinylidene difluoride) membrane by scanning electrochemical microscopy.

Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, acids, bases and organic materials.
